BLOATING: TAMING THE TUMMY

Gas/Dyspepsia is not a disease, but an indication to some other ill health condition. It causes various health disorders. According to the National Institutes of Health, when nitrogen, carbon dioxide, oxygen, hydrogen, and methane mix together, it forms intestinal gas. Intestinal gas is always present in the digestive track of a human body, from the stomach to rectum. If the intestinal gas is developed excessively, it causes severe problems, like burping, belching, or flatulence. When food stays in the stomach for a very long period of time, it puts a lot of pressure on the stomach and oesophagus. As a result, people suffer with the problem of indigestion as food requires acid for digestion. Thus, gas is produced when there is no sufficient acid in the stomach for digestion.
Types of Gas:
Gas is of two types, i.e. lower digestive gas and upper digestive gas. The upper digestive gas is formed by swallowing air while drinking or eating. It is passed out through the mouth in the form of burp. It can be trim down by bringing changes in the swallowing and chewing habits.
On the other side, lower digestive gas generates through the fermentation of food. It is passed out through anus. According to the International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders, there are four ways through which, gas moves out from the digestive tract:
*Belching
*Passing out through anus or flatus
*Absorption of gas into the blood
*Consumption by intestinal bacteria

Causes
According to sources, almost 10-20 percent of adults suffer with digestive problem. We all are fond of eating according to our taste and likes, but we are not aware of its after-effects. Very few people know about the causes of the gastric trouble. Generally, gastric problems arise due to bacteria, named H Pylori. Some other causes of gas are:
*Eating too spicy
*Improper chewing of food
*Anxiety and stress
*Excessive drinking of alcohol
*Swallowed air (if not burped up)
*Regular habit of having excess sauces and condiments
*Malfunctioning of intestines
*Bacterial infection
*Improper digestion
*Habit of talking while eating
*Chewing tobacco or smoking
*Over-eating
*Chewing gum or hard candy
*Constipation
*Use of artificial additives
*Use of laxatives in excess
Role of Probiotics in Bloating
Probiotics may also help aid in digestion and reduce excessive gas. Probiotics are live microorganisms, mostly “good” bacteria, similar to the bacteria found in the human gut.
Research published in theJournal of Clinical Gastroenterology in 2011 found that the probiotics Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium lactis eased bloating among the 60 participants with certain functional bowel disorders over the course of eight weeks.

The Link Between Gas, Stress, and Probiotics:
Gas can be worsened by stress. “There are nerves up and down the GI tract,” Lemond says. “People who have a tendency to be nervous can develop gas, diarrhea, or constipation.” Whendietary changesaren’t effective, other treatments, such as relaxation therapy, may help.
More specifically, UCLA researchers recently have drawn even more direct connections between the stomach, brain, and probioltics. The scientists found that bacteria in food can affect brain function in humans, according to a 2013 study published in the journal “Gastroenterology.” Life stress can cause spasms in the colon and abdominal discomfort, according to the results of a 2008 review of research published in journalEvidenced-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine. The researchers also noted that progressive muscle relaxation, meditation, yoga, counseling, or changes to daily stressful situations can help reduce stress and have a positive effect on digestive health.
Ginger is a Tummy Cleanser
Whether you’re nauseas, struggling with the stomach flu, or suffering from indigestion, chances are you’ve been given ginger in some form to help calm your upset tummy. It is capable of performing its wonders because of several different chemical components it possesses. Two chemicals-gingerols and shgaols- relax the intestinal track and ease any inflammation, while the root in its entirety act as a carminative-that is it prevents the formation of excess gas, or helps expel it.

Activate yourself
Activated charcoal has helped a number of people with their gas, although no exact reason is known. It is thought that it’s because the activated charcoal is porous (its created like regular charcoal, but oxidized with hot steam or air that makes it develop pores) and these internal spaces are good at trapping chemicals, which is why it is used in the case of drug overdoses. One could apply the same train of thought to excess gas given off by bacteria in our intestines. If you want to see if this could be effective for you, talk to your doctor and read the dosing on the back of the packaging. There is powder, capsule, and tablet form.
Chew food thoroughly
Gas is created, in most cases, by food that we’re having a hard time breaking down. If you chew your food thoroughly you’ll digest it faster, and it will pass through your body with ease. That means it’s not sitting your intestines causing more and more gas that builds up and needs to be expelled.

Drink warm lemon water
A glass of warm lemon water every morning keeps the doctor away. It may not sound as good as “an apple a day” but it’s still a helpful habit. Lemon is good for you in a number of ways, including lending a hand when it comes to easing your gas pain. The acidity in lemon stimulates the production of HCL (hydrochloric acid) which is what breaks down our food. More HCL = food breaking down more efficiently = less bloating and gas. The water flushes your system and keeps your digesting tract moving along smoothly. This mixture also works as a mighty fine way to detoxify your entire body, because the lemon helps the livers enzymes work more efficiently.

Foods That Cause Flatulence:
There are certain foods that are gas-producing in the body and these should be avoided to prevent further build-ups. The worst culprits are cabbage, onions, prunes, brussels sprouts, beans, apples, peaches, pears, corn, oats, potatoes, dates, broccoli, cauliflower, milk, ice cream, soft cheese, fried foods, spicy foods, refined sugars, processed foods and fluffy wheat products such as bread.
There are also foods that produce minimal gas and bloating and can be safely eaten. These include; citrus fruits, bananas, grapes, rice, eggs, naturalyogurt, hard cheese, meat (as long as you chew it fully) and non-carbonated drinks. Chewing on some fresh basil along with adding it to your cooking will also help to prevent further flatulence problems.

Reduce dairy products:

Eating less dairy product will ensure that your gas generation will be less and ease your pain due to gas. High pH food like buttermilk can be taken in sufficient quantities so that the reaction with bile will generate less gas.
Temporarily limit high-fiber foods:

Food rich in fiber are known to increase gas in stomach. Reducing intake of such high fiber food will reduce gas to a great extent. Along with other life style changes you may be able to increase your high fiber food to its previous levels.
