First let me apologize for the protracted absence. I am on Youth Service and was posted to camp at a place with virtually zero network. I am at my PPA now and I hope the network situation improves so that you, my lovely people may resume enjoyment of the lovely mind edification which Golden Living provides. Now to the business of the day.
Bleeding gum is a condition which occurs due to gum infection, poor oral hygiene or it may be caused due to certain internal infection. It can occasionally be an indication of some serious ailments like platelet disorder or leukemia. If not taken care of properly, it may lead to gingivitis or inflammation of the gums. Luckily, it is reversible and can be cured via simple and easy home remedies as well as maintaining proper hygienic health of the mouth. It can also be significant of some vitamin deficiencies such as vitamin C. (scurvy), hormonal changes from pregnancy, leukemia, many kinds of infections, or brushing your teeth too hard.
Along with home remedies one should visit a dentist once in six months for proper cleaning and for plaque removal to prevent gum diseases and dental problems like gingivitis and periodontitis.
Home Remedies for Bleeding Gums include:
Citrus Fruits:
One of the major reasons for bleeding gums is a deficiency of Vitamin C. Citrus fruits like oranges and lemons, as well as vegetables, especially broccoli and cabbage, can prevent you from bleeding gums by providing adequate amounts of vitamin C.
Milk:
Milk is also a rich source of calcium, which constantly needs to be replenished to strengthen your gums. Therefore, milk should be drunk on a regular basis for preventing bleeding gums. However, bear in mind that milk is also a source of fat. When you take milk, fat may stick to your gum which is not good for healthy gums. It is, therefore, very important to brush your teeth after taking milk. Dentists advise not to take milk one hour before going to bed.
Avoid Smoking:
Smoking makes the mouth conditions anaerobic, which favor the growth of certain bacteria. Therefore, you should avoid smoking in order to keep your mouth free of bacteria.

Raw Vegetables:
Chewing raw vegetables cleans the teeth and induces blood circulation in gums. Therefore, you should add some raw vegetables to your diet every day. Vegetables are rich in vitamins and low in fats and calories. Chewing raw vegetables help to improve blood circulation in gums and thus may help to reduce and treat the bleeding of gums.
Saline:
You can gargle after brushing your teeth with lukewarm water with a pinch of salt added to it. This is a good home remedy to treat bleeding gums.
Massage:
Gently massaging the gums with your fingers after brushing your teeth results in good blood circulation. This strengthens the gums and prevents them from bleeding.
Avoid Fatty Foods:
Fatty, spicy and heavy diets contain foods that get deposited in teeth cavities and provides food sources for unhealthy microbes. This subsequently leads to bleeding gums or even gingivitis. If you suffer from bleeding gums, you should avoid fatty foods as much as possible.
Honey:
Honey is sweet, yet it is beneficial for gums because of its anti-bacterial properties. It is also rich in minerals and vitamins and provides the necessary nutrients for maintaining healthy gums. Take some organic or manuka honey and rub them on your gums twice a day.
Alum:
Gingivitis causes gums to be red and sore. Alum works perfectly against the redness of the bleeding gums. Dissolve some alum in warm water and gargle with the solution. Repeat three times a day.
Garlic and honey paste:
Garlic is a very powerful anti-biotic. When combined with manuka honey, it forms a very powerful anti-bacterial tonic. Rub the garlic-honey paste on the gums. Please note that you will feel burning sensation. In order to reduce the burning sensation mix half a clove of garlic into one tablespoon of raw honey and apply the paste.
Anti-Biotic
Eating synthetic anti-biotic is not natural and bears many side effects. We do not recommend eating anti-biotic in the drug form. However, your doctor or dentist may prescribe anti-biotic pills or capsules as a last resort. Garlic, onions and ginger also bear many anti biotic properties.

Apply tea bags:
Steep a tea bag in boiling water for 2-3 minutes, remove it, and allow it to cool until you can handle it comfortably. Hold the cooled tea bag on the affected area of your gums and keep it there for about five minutes. The tannic acid in the tea bag can work effectively to relieve gum infection. Directly applying the tea bag to your gums is more effective than simply drinking the beverage. Plus, drinking too much tea has a dental downside: discolored, tea-stained teeth.

Other Tips:
The best way to stop bleeding gums is to see your dentist. Your dentist can give you tips on how to stop bleeding gums in between dental visits. That advice might include some of the following tips:
– Use a soft toothbrush and brush properly too. Brush the teeth for at least two minutes twice a day and after meals. Hard brushing can further damage the soft tissues of your mouth.
– Floss at least once a day and be sure to floss beyond the gum line to remove more plaque.
– Control bleeding by applying pressure to the area with a cold compress.
– Rinse with salt water or hydrogen peroxide to keep the area clean. Avoid mouth washes that contain alcohol, which can dry out your mouth.
– Stay away from smoking and other tobacco products, which can aggravate bleeding gums.
– Eat a balanced diet and limit snacking between meals. Carbohydrates and sugars feed dental plaque.
– Try an oral irrigation device, commonly known as a “water pick,” to clear debris from around the gum line.
– Have your dentures aligned as needed.
